I have been in a short term relationship where my partner was scarily obsessive, possessive, violent and downright loony quite frankly. She was also an alcoholic and had an extremely addictive personality. I escaped after 6 months. It happens and I can, sadly, imagine the events in False Eyelash taking place. However, I quite agree with you that this is not the norm and thankfully, was a one off for me. I do believe this happens more than you would think though.
