I took it that she only considered the transgender route because she thought it would be easier than being a butch lesbian. Today, I think she might feel more comfortable.

I always wondered why she stopped the treatments? She was so brave when times were unforgiving, and then to just stop?

But didn't she find herself between worlds, accepted by neither side? The femme lesbians wouldn't accept her and the straight women wouldn't either. These days, there almost are no sides so it might be easier.

God yes. That's what's so great about the book--it's so excruciating yet you feel so much for the character and that fact that she remained true to herself despite such odds. And alive. That she even survived!
